Claire Herbert's Profile

Claire worked in education policy settings at the Teacher Training Agency (TTA) and Department for Education and Skills (DfES) before becoming an equality and diversity officer at the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority (QCA). In that role Claire worked on developing the organisation’s first gender equality scheme and contributed to their later single equality scheme. Claire advised colleagues on equality legislation and organisational policy and ran training and information seminars. She also helped to develop and embed the organisation’s impact assessment process.

Claire has had a specific interest in race equality, and the implementation of race equality, since working at the QCA and seeing the complexity between public policy development and social justice for minoritized groups. Claire’s Master’s dissertation looked at the potential impact of the Equality Act 2010 when compared to progress that has been made in race equality since the Race Relations Amendment Act 2000, and the effectiveness of legislation as a driver for social change.

After completing her Master’s degree (in Social Justice and Education), Claire worked as a qualitative researcher at LSN, completing projects which included the barriers and enablers to career development for black and minority ethnic staff in further education and various other equality and diversity research projects.
