Deepty is Unit Support Officer at Equality Challenge Unit

Deepty Harji

Deepty graduated with a degree in International development: the third world and non-governmental organisation management. As part of this degree, she took part in a study abroad programme in Egypt with the American University of Cairo, where she studied development, environmental politics and the UN as a player in global poverty.

During her time abroad, she taught English in a Sudanese refugee learning centre and also worked as a project worker in an orphanage. Deepty has been a day centre worker on a voluntary basis, for the Refugee Council, where she has helped meet the needs of refugees and asylum seekers playing a key role in promoting their integration.

Prior to joining ECU, Deepty has worked for LEPRA Health in Action, reaching those who are stigmatised and helping to eliminate some preventable and curable diseases including leprosy and TB. She has also worked for the Charities Advisory Trust on various campaigns with grassroots organisations in South India. At present she also works for the West London YMCA as a duty support officer providing guidance and assistance to vulnerable young adults facing homelessness.

Deepty is passionate about development and in particular, she is interested in human rights, education and health needs of those who are impoverished and marginalised. Currently training as a counsellor, Deepty hopes to complete her diploma and practice her skills professionally to support the emotional and mental well-being of people in conflict areas.

Delighted to be offering support across all ECU programmes, Deepty is thoroughly enjoying assisting her colleagues.
