An opportunity  to hear about the implications of the Equality Bill for higher education institutions and to discuss the terms of a response to the consultation on the proposed public duties.

The Equality Bill

The Equality Bill, published on Monday 27 April 2009 by the Government Equalities Office, will have legal and practical implications for all higher education institutions.

The Bill proposes a general public duty on public authorities including higher education institutions. The duty will be extended from the current areas of race, gender and disability to include the protected characteristics of sex, pregnancy and maternity, gender reassignment, age, sexual orientation and religion and belief.

Consultation events

A consultation on the details of the public duties will begin in June. ECU is holding three events around the country offering HEIs the opportunity to discuss the implementation of the duties and to share their views. The events will then inform ECU's response to government on behalf of the sector.

The London consultation event is a joint event held in partnership with AUA, the Association of University Administrators.
