Gay footballers: welcome or unwanted?

There are about half a million professional footballers in the world. None of them is gay... at least, not openly so. Staffordshire University celebrates lesbian, gay, bisexual and trans history month

Gay players are either afraid to come out for fear of the response of fans, or are intimidated by the anticipated reaction of their fellow players - at least, that's the popular view.

New research from Staffordshire University indicates that all is not as it seems. A survey of 3500 fans and football industry professionals suggests a starkly different vision of football culture to the popular view. The answers are surprising.

Hosted by:

  • Mike Wolfe: the first elected mayor of Stoke-on-Trent
  • Ellis Cashmore: professor of culture, media and sport
  • Dr Jamie Cleland: senior lecturer in sociology of sport

Students, staff and members of the local community are welcome. For further information or to reserve a place, contact Clare Harp.
