Meeting the challenge: improving black and minority ethnic student success and attainment
A one day conference to explore and address improving the success and attainment of black and minority ethnic (BME) students
ECU and the Higher Education Academy, together with Coventry University have organised this in-depth conference to explore ways of improving the success and attainment of BME students.
There is a growing awareness and recognition of the under-achievement of BME students within the higher education sector. ECU, in partnership with the Higher Education Academy, initiated a ‘summit programme’ in 2008/9 to address the explore the issue. As part of the programme, a number of higher education institutions developed and implemented strategic and practice-related responses to this issue.
This conference brings together those responses and research from other initiatives across the sector which have identified strategies for making a difference to supporting BME students' success.
The conference will:
- Bring researchers, practitioners, policy makers, managers and students together to share and discuss best practices
- Disseminate action-orientated institutional research and development initiatives that offer pointers for making in-roads into reducing the BME attainment gaps
- Ensure the issue of attainment gaps remains high on the agenda
- Generate new ideas for research
- The opportunity to learn from the experiences of teams participating in the summit programme
