Promoting and progressing race equality
The Race Relations Act 1976 as amended by the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 gives higher education institutions a statutory general duty to promote race equality
The former Commission for Racial Equality published a guide for further and higher education institutions on the General Duty to promote race equality and also provided further guidance on promoting good race relations.
Following the passing of the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000, in 2003 ECU managed a Review of progress in race equality of a sample of 55 English higher education institutions (HEIs) on behalf of the Higher Education Funding Council for England in order to learn how institutions had implemented the Race Relations (Amendment) Act 2000 and what outcomes had been achieved.
The Joint Negotiating Committee for Higher Education Staff and ECU have jointly produced a Communication and Consultation Toolkit for Higher Education Institutions to assist them in enhancing their communication and consultation processes in order to promote race equality. The guidance draws on work produced by the Gus John Partnership, and helps HEIs to be better informed in their decision-making processes and carry out institutional functions effectively and efficiently with buy-in from their relevant stakeholders.
