Equality Bill announced as part of the government's legislative programme

The Equality Bill was formally announced in the Queens Speech on Wednesday 3 December. Despite fears that it might be dropped due to the government focusing on the current economic climate, the bill was included as one of only 14 new pieces of legislation.

Her Majesty said:

'My government is committed to ensuring everyone has a fair chance in life. My government will bring forward a bill to promote equality, fight discrimination and introduce transparency in the workplace to help address the difference in pay between men and women.'

Full details of the bill are yet to be announced. ECU will update the sector as more information becomes available.
