Equality Bill expected around 20 April 2009

The Equality Bill is due to be published after Easter, and is expected to be presented to parliament between 20-30 April 2009. The second reading of the bill is scheduled for May.

The bill aims to streamline and extend existing equalities legislation, and is likely to have an impact on the public duties that higher education institutions have a legal implication to fulfil. ECU will be issuing a briefing on the implications of the Equality Bill for the higher education sector following publication.

Equality Challenge Unit will be organising regional events for the higher education sector, which will involve analysis and discussion of the impact of the bill.

Further details will be announced shortly.
