New Chief Executive joins ECU

11 June 2010

David Ruebain takes up the post of Chief Executive

David Ruebain joined ECU as Chief Executive at the beginning of June. David was previously Director of Legal Policy at the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

A practicing solicitor for 21 years, David is a renowned expert in the fields of education and disability. As Head of Education and Disability Law at Levenes Solicitors, David was nominated for the Law Society's lifetime achievement award in human rights, and is a winner of RADAR's 2002 People of the Year award.

Commenting that this is a key time both for ECU and the sector, David said:

'The higher education sector is facing a number of challenges at this time, including new equalities legislation and the current economic environment.

The first provisions of the Equality Act 2010 are due to come in to force in October, bringing with them a number of new responsibilities and duties for higher education institutions.

ECU will play a key role in guiding and supporting institutions as they respond to the changes ahead. I look forward to working with the sector to ensure that we continue to maximise opportunities for everyone working or studying in higher education.'
