Briefings on religion and belief
Working with staff and student religious groups, unions and other national organisations to develop consensus about practical issues that arise on campus
For: Human resources; equality and diversity practitioners; students' unions; student faith groups
When: September 2008 – December 2009
In 2008, ECU held a meeting with student religious groups, unions and other national-level organisations to explore and develop consensus about practical issues that have been arising on campus.
Responding to the recommendations of that meeting and through working with the sector, ECU has identified a number of areas in which support may be provided to reconcile religious observance and academic or management responsibilities.
Briefings and case studies on these areas have been produced, the first covering religious observance and institutional timetabling of assessment, teaching and contractual hours. The second briefing provides practical guidance for institutions on potential conflicts between religious observance and the provision of facilities and services.
ECU will continue to draw on the experiences and perspectives of those who attended the 2008 meeting.
