Flexible approaches to retirement
Adopting flexible approaches to retirement and extending working life beyond the default retirement age of 65
For: Equality and diversity practitioners; human resources
When: March 2010 – July 2010
ECU will be working on a project with the Oxford Brookes University Centre for Diversity Policy Research and Practice in 2010 to help higher education institutions (HEIs) extend the working lives of their staff. Understanding the models of flexible retirement that are available to the sector will be a key outcome of this work.
The government is currently reviewing the default retirement age of 65. It is likely that it will increase the age at which it is set or completely remove the retirement age within the next 12 months.
HEIs will need to be considering how they respond to changes in legislation. Adopting flexible approaches to retirement now will help HEIs meet the challenges that the changes in legislation will bring.
This collaborative project builds on a previous project undertaken on age diversity by Oxford Brookes, which ECU was also involved in. Details on that project, including case studies on flexible retirement, can be found on the Oxford Brookes website: Developing good practice in managing age diversity in the HE sector.
