Guidance on the benefits of allowing staff to adopt flexible working patterns up to and beyond the default retirement age of 65

For: Equality and diversity practitioners; human resources

When: March 2010 – July 2010

ECU will produce guidance in 2010 that will help higher education institutions (HEIs) to recognise the benefits of providing flexible retirement options for their staff. It will look at the issues that HEIs need to consider and provide guidance on how to set about introducing flexibility in working in the run up to, and beyond, age 65.

The government is currently reviewing the default retirement age of 65. It is likely that it will increase the age at which it is set or completely remove the retirement age.

HEIs will need to be considering how they respond to changes in legislation. Adopting flexible approaches to retirement now will help HEIs meet the challenges that the changes in legislation will bring.
