Supporting international staff in higher education

An investigation into the experiences and support needs of international staff

For: Senior management, human resources departments, equality and diversity practitioners

When: May 2011 – October 2012

Anecdotal evidence in the sector suggests that international staff sometimes perceive that they don't have sufficient support services available to them. The purpose of this project is to explore the issues that international staff face, and look at practical ways that HEIs might be able to address them.

The first part of the project involved an online survey which was launched in September 2011 to gather the experiences and opinions of international staff. That has now closed and the results are being analysed to form part of an overall guidance document for the sector.

Good practice

We are currently asking institutions to share their good practice with us. If you have any initiatives or policies that are aimed specifically at your international staff which are having a positive impact on their experience of living and working in the UK then we would like to hear from you. Good practice might involve specific inductions for international staff, additional information pages on your website, a specific staff network, or something completely different.

If you have any good practice to share with the sector then please contact Claire Herbert (claire.herbert@ecu.ac.uk, 020 7438 1016).

ECU will follow up examples we receive in 2012 to build case studies of good practice to share across the sector.

A report summarising both the survey, and the good practice identified will be published in 2012.
