Work placements and transition to work
Working with specialist arts-based higher education institutions to develop inclusive work placement activities
For: Careers advisory staff; placement staff; course directors; academic faculty involved in arranging placement activity
When: June 2009 – May 2010
ECU research has found work placements to be an important mechanism for supporting disabled students into work, but the placement process itself can cause barriers for some students. Other research has found that black and minority ethnic students, international students and those seeking to work in areas where men or women are traditionally under-represented may experience barriers to a positive work placement experience.
Working with a range of sector partners, professional careers service bodies, careers advisers and students who are undertaking a work placement activity, ECU will develop guidance to support the development of inclusive work placement activities for the higher education sector. This project will initially focus on workplace experiences connected to arts-based institutions.
The guidance, due to be published in Summer 2010, will be an essential resource for staff involved in specialist work placement activity in the higher education sector.
Project team
ECU has commissioned the Institute for Policy Studies in Education to conduct the research for this project.
