James is the Equality Charters Development Manager and joined Equality Challenge Unit in 2013. He provides strategic and operational support to the development of the Athena SWAN Charter across the UK and especially in Scotland.

Work background

  • Policy Officer, later Manager, at the Biochemical Society, working across a wide range of science policy issues in conjunction with colleagues at the Society of Biology
  • Played a key role in the development of a number of gender equality initiatives, including standalone projects and for the Biochemical Society’s Celebrating women in biochemistry year in 2013
  • Sat on judging panels for two rounds of Athena SWAN Charter awards during this period
  • Previously worked in a variety of science press, communications and policy roles
  • Holds a First class BSc (Hons) degree in Anatomy (University of Glasgow)
