What's the difference between the General and Specific Duties of the RRA?
What is the difference between the General and Specific Duties of the Race Relations Act, and how can institutions ensure the best response to the requirements of these duties?
- The General Duty is as stated in Section 71 (1) of the Race Relations Act 1976, and is what public authorities are expected to do in order to promote race equality.
- The Specific Duties are particular actions that have been ordered on various named public institutions in England, Wales and Scotland, by the Home Secretary and Scottish Ministers, under the Act, to enable institutions to meet the General Duty requirements.
Further information on the General and Specific Duties placed on higher education institutions can be obtained from the Commission for Racial Equality (now EHRC) Statutory Code of Practice on the Duty to Promote Race Equality and related Guides.
