What is the Disability Equality Implementation Group?
In March 2007, the National Institute of Adult Continuing Education (NIACE) established the Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning. The Commission conducted research into the experiences and barriers encountered by disabled people working within the lifelong learning sector (including higher education).
The Commission’s final report, From Compliance to culture change – Disabled staff working in lifelong learning (2008), recommended the creation of a formal Disability Equality Implementation Group (DEIG), consisting of key equality, union and education partners.
The purpose of DEIG is to monitor the full implementation of the Commission's recommendations. Equality Challenge Unit is a member of DEIG and will work with the group to support the lifelong learning sector to embed disability equality for staff. DEIG first met in June 2008 and all members commit to demonstrating good practice and promoting the social and affirmative models of disability.
