The humane selfie: ‘Life gets better together’

Keywords: Gender identity, Religion and belief, Sexual orientation

Region: London region

This project aimed to bring students and staff together in purposeful, mutually beneficial activities, to promote greater understanding and respect between various protected characteristics. While the project considered all protected characteristics, there was a greater emphasis on sexual orientation, gender identity, and religion and belief.

The project achieved the following outcomes:

  • Celebration of LGBT History Month for the first time at the College
  • Six week course (crafting language) – students explore local LGBT History, use of language (including Polari) and labels to create a visual piece or performance
  • e-learning (Humane Selfie Project), students are videoed or video themselves on the perception of LGBT at the College
  • Pilot and design an anti-discriminatory staff development training package to include dealing with challenging behaviour within an adult context
  • Pilot and design of a vocational hairdressing module inclusive of all gender and sexualities
  • Half day conference aimed at senior E&D managers in the sector to share good practice
