Internationally renowned Athena SWAN awards held today
Ninety-six Athena SWAN awards have been presented to higher education institutions and individual departments who are taking action on gender inequality in higher education.
University College London and the University of Edinburgh received Silver awards, bringing the number of Silver institutions across the UK to seven.
The Athena SWAN charter was recently found to be the only award scheme to be effective at creating structural change for gender equality in research institutions. The GENDER NET project investigated eight award schemes across Europe and internationally.
It also found that Athena SWAN’s method and processes would allow for transferability to other countries, and the GENDER NET project is currently building on this to develop a framework for a transnational gender equality awards scheme.
