Women in engineering – tackling sexism vs ‘fixing’ women’

Advance HE policy officer, Kay Steven, wrote a blog ahead of International Women in Engineering Day looking at Scotland’s approach to improving gender equality in engineering and how to avoid taking a deficit-model approach.

Identifying the perceived causes of the HEI sector’s gender pay gap

Advance HE is currently analysing reports submitted by 121 English higher education institutions who provided narratives around their gender pay gap reporting. Advance HE researcher, James Dawkins, wrote a blog on the initial findings, identifying the three most frequently mentioned explanations for pay discrepancies.

2018 Student Academic Experience Survey

The Higher Education Policy Institute and Advance HE 2018 Student Academic Experience Survey records the views of over 14,000 students.

Call for evidence on tackling the BME attainment gap

Universities UK and the National Union of Students launch a call for evidence on tackling the black and minority ethnic attainment gap. There is a questionnaire for university staff and another questionnaire for university students and student representatives. If you are not in one of these groups but would like to participate you can send your thoughts by email to Emily Darian by Friday 29 June 2018.

Case studies: reasonable adjustments and inclusive education environments

New case studies are available on our website providing insight into inclusive teaching and learning initiatives at several universities, from holding mental health awareness events to expanding the provision of hearing loops.

Women in Science Database (WISDATABASE)

Royal Holloway University of London, the British Psychological Society, and the British Neuroscience Association have announced a new initiative, the Women in Science Database, to tackle the problem of under-representation of women in science by raising awareness of their achievements


Attracting Diversity webinar – applying and sharing learning from positive action pilots

Professor Liz Thomas and Advance HE policy officer, Kay Steven, will look at learnings from Advance HE’s Attracting Diversity project. They will explore how best to utilise learning and progress from positive action initiatives designed to tackle student underrepresentation across protected characteristics.
