Research Insight – Migrant female academics in higher education
This second Research Insight focuses on the influence of non-UK nationality and ethnicity on migrant female academics’ role and position in UK higher education.
Specifically, it aims to identify whether and how nationality, ethnicity, and the intersection of these two characteristics are related to female academics’ job role and contract level.
Findings suggest specific barriers to career progression for black and minority ethnic (BME) female academics, with these being compounded by nationality for non-EU BME female staff in particular, pinpointing contract levels where BME non-EU female academics may experience barriers to progression and promotion that institutions should address if they wish to retain non-UK staff.
